Pretend Play for the Summer

The weather is getting warmer and warmer as the days go by and the kids really need to get outdoors more. The backyard can be a wonderful place for imagination. There are plenty of pretend play items that you can pick up for the yard that will get them out in the fresh air but still give them some sort of props and toys to play with. It’s really the best of both worlds.

The classic of all pretend play is a playhouse. Whether its a small cabin or a two story castle, your kids are going to love playing house. It teaches them about family roles and how to interact with each other. It also gives them their own space, which can be fun when it’s lunch time and they want to feel like big kids, eating at their own table in their own “house”.

A pretend play barbecue grill is great summer fun as well. Have the kids mimic dad, flipping their own burgers and grilling their own hot dogs on their own grill, with tools and all. It’ll be a great bonding experience for the whole family to really get into barbecue-ing together!

Pretend Play Gets Your Kids Imagination Going

When I was a kid, there was nothing better than when I got to go to my best friend Danielle’s house. She had the best pretend play toys. My favorite was this huge kitchen, with pull out drawers that held fake utensils and dishes, an oven and a little microwave. It was pretty awesome and we would play with it for hours, switching roles, coming up with various scenarios and never getting bored.

That’s the fantastic thing about pretend play toys. Your kids are doing all the brain work of coming up with the fun, they just don’t realize it. And you don’t need a huge fake playhouse for their imagination to go wild. Kids can create fun out of even smaller things, like toy workshops or a baby stroller for their doll. All they need is some sort of toy or prop that’ll ignite their minds. It’s amazing what they can think of if just given a little push.

Pretend play toys are the kind that will entertain for hours. While a television show is only 30 minutes and a board game eventually ends with a winner, pretend play can go on for hours and really stimulate the brain. Nourish your child’s imagination!

I loved my wooden toys when I was a kid. Sure, I had plenty of other popular things like Barbies and such, but nothing thrilled me the way my wooden blocks did. I loved playing Godzilla. That was, setting up an entire city, skyscrapers and all, then walking over it all like Godzilla. Oh to be young and easily amused again.
